In the fall of 1991, a steering committee formed the idea of creating a statewide leadership program which will convene professionals from both the public and private sectors and help build a better Maryland.
With the aid of considerable community and corporate support and donated talent and resources, Leadership Maryland was incorporated in September 1992, as an affiliate of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce. In February of 1993, Leadership Maryland obtained its 501(c)3 designation and later that year, the inaugural class was born. In 1997, Leadership Maryland became independent from the Maryland Chamber of Commerce.
Since that first class, Leadership Maryland has evolved into one of the most successful as well as significant statewide leadership programs in the United States. To help reflect this position, in 2015 Leadership Maryland rebranded with a new logo and tagline: The Strength Within.

The strength within our state.
At Leadership Maryland, we believe that building a stronger Maryland starts in our own communities. So we bring together the best and brightest leaders from all sectors, industries, and geographic corners of our state to engage on the vital issues affecting Maryland and find solutions for real, actionable change. |
The strength within our alumni family.
As men and women of Leadership Maryland, we are stronger together. Inside our alumni family, we are the state’s best and brightest leaders, hailing from all sectors of industry and all corners of the state. Whenever one of us needs a hand, we know we can call on one another, as a colleague, a connection, and a friend. |
“I was honored to be a member of the inaugural class in 1993 and found it to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my professional life. The Leadership Maryland program was immeasurably enriched by the excellence and varied experiences and expertise of my classmates.”
